DRIVE holiday in Lithuania (7 days/6 nights)

Expiry date: 2018-12-31 16:00:00

A DRIVE holiday in Lithuania is a great way to explore towns, villages and natural wonders at your own pace. Our carefully planned routes guide you round areas of interest such as the Trakai, Kaunas, Hill of Crosses, Curonian Spit and seaside resort town of Palanga.

We highlight points of interest from both a geographical and historical perspective, but you decide what you want to see. The routes are planned so you don't have to drive extended periods without a break. Your accommodation is usually in guest houses or small hotels and is on a bed and breakfast basis.

Explore the beautiful baroque town of Vilnius, travel to the fairytale red-bricked castle in Traikai - Eastern Europe’s only island castle - and from Kaunas, continue along the scenic Panemuné road visiting castles and manor houses that line this picturesque route. Spend time relaxing in Lithuania’s resort town of Nida, on the stunning Curonian Spit, where the fragile landscape of shifting sand dunes, and pine forests where elk and wild boar roam free, is protected by national park status. This tour can also be arranged using public buses.

DAY 1. Pick up the car at the airport and drive to Vilnius. Check in for 2 nights.

DAY 2. Drive to Trakai. This small town is located 28 kilometres from Vilnius, it is most famous for its 15th century insular castle housing an exhibition on prehistoric findings and the 17-18th century applied art, the way of life of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes, and the Karaites, brought to Lithuania from the Crimea. Also Trakai are famous for the traditionakl Caraims dish - kibinai.

DAY 3. Drive to Nida (about 300 kilometres). En route, stop in Kaunas and explore its narrow streets, then stop in Klaipeda and explore its narrow streets, merchant houses and remnants of medieval fortifications. Arrive Nida and check in to the hotel for 2 nights.

DAY 4. Spend the days exploring the Curonian Spit and relaxing in this fishing village of quaint wooden houses, with bright blue shutters and colourful flower gardens. This area once belonged to Prussia and it became a popular retreat for German artists and exiles. German writer Thomas Mann had a summer house just outside Nida which is now open to visitors. Nida is a popular destination for Lithuanian holiday makers - join them tasting delicious cold beetroot soup and sampling cool local beer.

DAY 5. Free day in Nida to explore at leisure.

DAY 6. Drive to Vilnius. (385 kilometres). It is recommended to drive via the Panemune Road, where it is possible to stop off and visit Panemune Castle in the town of Vytenai. Arrive Vilnius and check in to the hotel for an overnight stay.
